Flight Club

quackshot game design

Concept designs for the redesign of the "Quackshot" game at Flight Club.

The Brief

Quackshot is part of the Flight Club game suite. Like Killer it was decided to be built in a 'paper world'.

Task:

Design the game screen, game environment and storyboard in-game cutscene animations.

Process:

My role was to come up with designs that would then be passed to our 3D artist to build, using the 3D engine, before a games developer would code the game to bring it all together and make it playable.

Initial Phase

Early in the game redesign project we decided to make as much as possible of the environments from paper. This was to get an understanding of the limitations of complexity using this medium.

game screen

The majority of the gameplay takes place in a single screen.

I came up with the concept of hosting the main game screen inside a fairground booth.

Progress shots of the game screen.

Requirements:

  • 16:9 aspect ratio

  • Player photos and names to remain the same size as existing game

  • Have space for up to 18 duck symbols to indicate number of Quackshots

  • Have space for 2-12 players

  • Contain the Round indicator

  • Indicate player position/number

Game Environment

Although most of the gameplay takes place in one screen we wanted to look at the wider environment.

With the game set in a fairground game booth it was debated whether to add fairground pieces to build the world or set it up like a maquette.

Initial game environment concept.

After looking at the wider environment we decided to change the sign shape on top of the booth to better accommodate the game logo.

intro concept

An initial concept for the intro to the Quackshot game.

Animated storyboard.

Quack Trick

The Quackshot game has three cutscene animations that can be triggered by different events.

Here is a storyboard for the Quack Trick cutscene that's triggered when you get three bullseyes on your turn.

loose as a goose

A storyboard and final animation for the Loose as a Goose cutscene.

The Loose as a Goose cutscene is triggered when you miss the inside of the triple ring with all three of your darts.

Ring of Fire

Concepts for the Ring of Fire cutscene.

The Ring of Fire cutscene is triggered when you throw a dart in the double of triple ring of the dartboard resulting in a negative score.

Red was used here to signify a negative action.
