Concept designs for the redesign of the "Killer" game at Flight Club.

The Brief

For their 10th anniversary, Flight Club wanted to re-design the existing game suite. The mechanics would be staying the same, but they wanted a visual update.

Before I was briefed it was agreed that the new games would exist in a 'paper' world.

Task:

Design the game screen, game environment and storyboard in-game cutscene animations.

Process:

My role was to come up with designs that would then be passed to our 3D artist to build, using the 3D engine, before a games developer would code the game to bring it all together and make it playable.

The majority of the gameplay takes place in a single screen.

 

I came up with the idea that if the game was set in a haunted house we could use the top window of the house area designed to look like a dart board for the main game screen.

Requirements:

  • 16:9 aspect ratio

  • Player photos and names to remain the same size as existing game

  • Show the bar/segment indicating how close a player is to becoming a 'Killer'

  • Have space for 2-12 players

  • Contain the 'Round' indicator

  • Indicate player position/number

train cars

As the game was taking place at a haunted house we needed some train cars for the players to 'ride' around the house in during the death cutscenes.

Initially the direction was for a simple traditional train car style, before going more conceptual and leaning into the haunted house theme and creating the skull seat.

Coloured variants were created to match the player colours assigned during the game.

Cutscenes

In the Killer game there are two instances where cutscenes occur separate from the other games:

  • When you become a "killer"

  • When a player is killed/knocked out of the game.

In the previous version of the game there were two versions of the cutscene when a player was knocked out of the game. With the new haunted house environment it was agreed to create more cutscenes to utilise the house.

Below are some animated storyboards that were passed on to the 3D artist to build and animate.
